The United Kingdom has strengthened its trade relationship with Madagascar through the enhanced Developing Countries Trading Scheme (DCTS). The DCTS, which replaced the UK's Generalised Scheme of Preferences in 2023, offers duty-free, quota-free access to the UK market for all goods from eligible Least Developed Countries, including Madagascar.
This framework is complemented by the existing UKβEastern and Southern Africa (ESA) Economic Partnership Agreement, which provides continuity for Madagascar's trade with the UK following Brexit. The UK government states these agreements are designed to support sustainable economic growth, development, and regional integration in Madagascar.
According to the UK's Department for Business and Trade, the DCTS aims to boost trade by simplifying rules of origin and extending product coverage. Key exports from Madagascar to the UK include textiles, spices, and precious stones. The partnership is part of the UK's broader strategy to deepen economic ties with African nations.
