Uganda and Vietnam have agreed to deepen their bilateral relations, with a particular focus on enhancing Uganda's coffee sector by leveraging Vietnam's expertise. The announcement came during a visit by Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh to Uganda, marking the first visit by a Vietnamese head of government to the East African nation.
The two countries signed several memoranda of understanding covering agriculture, trade, and investment. Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni and PM Chinh discussed ways to transform over five decades of diplomatic ties into concrete economic benefits. Vietnam is one of the world's largest coffee producers and exporters, while Uganda is Africa's leading coffee exporter.
According to official statements, the partnership aims to improve coffee yields and quality in Uganda through technology transfer and training. Both sides also expressed interest in expanding trade in other agricultural commodities and manufactured goods.
The visit underscores growing South-South cooperation, with Vietnam offering its development experience to African nations. No specific investment figures were disclosed, but both leaders emphasized a commitment to boosting two-way trade.
