Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has announced that the state government will introduce the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) bill during the upcoming Monsoon Session of the state assembly. The announcement was made on June 18, 2026, during a press conference in Bhopal.
Yadav stated that the UCC bill aims to provide a common set of laws governing personal matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption for all citizens, regardless of religion. He emphasized that the bill would be based on recommendations from a committee formed to study the issue and after consultations with various stakeholders.
The Monsoon Session of the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly is expected to convene in July 2026. The UCC has been a key agenda item for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led state government, following similar moves in other BJP-ruled states like Uttarakhand, which passed its UCC bill earlier this year.
Opposition parties have criticized the move, arguing that it could infringe upon religious freedoms and cultural diversity. However, CM Yadav defended the bill, stating it would ensure gender justice and equality for all citizens. The exact provisions of the bill have not yet been made public.
