The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has officially withdrawn from the Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries (OAPEC), a regional oil group founded in 1968. The decision, announced on May 3, 2026, was confirmed by the UAE's Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure.
According to a statement from the ministry, the move aligns with the UAE's strategic focus on diversifying its energy portfolio and increasing its investments in renewable energy sources. The UAE has been a member of OAPEC since 1970.
OAPEC, headquartered in Kuwait, includes 11 member countries from the Arab world. The UAE's departure is seen as a reflection of its evolving energy policy, which emphasizes sustainability and reducing dependence on fossil fuels. No other member countries have announced similar withdrawals.
