The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has officially activated In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) services for its eligible members under the Social Health Authority (SHA) Mwalimu Comprehensive Cover. This expansion, effective as of May 2026, aims to enhance healthcare benefits for teachers, addressing fertility issues that affect many educators.
According to TSC officials, the inclusion of IVF services is part of a broader effort to improve the welfare of teachers, who previously had limited access to such specialized treatments under the old National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) scheme. The SHA Mwalimu Comprehensive Cover now covers up to three cycles of IVF per beneficiary, subject to medical eligibility criteria.
Dr. Nancy Macharia, TSC Chief Executive Officer, stated, 'This initiative underscores our commitment to supporting teachers' health and well-being. We recognize that fertility challenges can be a source of stress, and this cover will provide much-needed relief.' The move has been welcomed by teacher unions, including the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), which had advocated for expanded reproductive health services.
To access the IVF services, teachers must be registered under the SHA Mwalimu Comprehensive Cover and obtain a referral from a designated healthcare provider. The TSC has partnered with several accredited fertility clinics across Kenya to ensure quality care. As of May 1, 2026, over 300,000 teachers are eligible for the cover.
