According to the latest International Monetary Fund (IMF) data for 2026, Seychelles remains the wealthiest country in Africa by GDP per capita (PPP), with an estimated $21,875. This small island nation continues to benefit from a strong tourism sector and sound economic policies.
Mauritius ranks second with a GDP per capita of $16,562, driven by its diversified economy including financial services, textiles, and tourism. Botswana takes third place at $15,176, supported by diamond mining and prudent fiscal management.
Gabon ($14,750) and Equatorial Guinea ($13,500) round out the top five, though Equatorial Guinea's economy has faced challenges due to declining oil production. Other notable entries include South Africa ($13,400), Namibia ($12,800), and Egypt ($12,200).
The rankings highlight the economic disparities across the continent, with resource-rich nations and island states generally performing better. However, many countries continue to grapple with inflation, debt, and infrastructure gaps.
