DODOMA: The Tanzanian government has announced new measures to strengthen disability inclusion in the public service, aiming to create a more inclusive working environment for public servants with disabilities. The move focuses on reinforcing the implementation of existing employment policies and guidelines across public institutions.
According to a statement from the Prime Minister's Office (Labour, Youth, Employment and Persons with Disability), the initiative includes enhanced workplace protections and accessibility improvements. The government is working to ensure that all public institutions comply with the Persons with Disabilities Act of 2010 and the National Employment Policy.
Key measures include the establishment of disability focal points in each ministry, the provision of reasonable accommodations such as assistive technologies and accessible infrastructure, and the promotion of inclusive recruitment practices. The government also plans to conduct regular audits to monitor compliance and address barriers.
This initiative aligns with Tanzania's commitments under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD), which the country ratified in 2009. The government has emphasized that disability inclusion is a priority for achieving sustainable development goals.
