Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Chaibani visited Rabat, Morocco, on May 14, 2026, marking his first official trip to the North African kingdom. During a joint press conference with his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita, Al-Chaibani emphasized the warm reception he received, stating, 'The welcome in Morocco has been very warm, reflecting the depth of relations between our two countries.'
The visit comes amid a broader diplomatic thaw between Syria and several Arab nations, following years of regional isolation due to the Syrian civil war. Morocco had recalled its ambassador from Damascus in 2012 but has gradually re-engaged with the Syrian government in recent years.
Discussions between the two ministers focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation in trade, consular services, and regional security. Bourita reiterated Morocco's support for Syria's territorial integrity and sovereignty, while Al-Chaibani expressed gratitude for Morocco's humanitarian aid during the 2023 earthquake in Syria.
No specific agreements were signed during the visit, but both sides agreed to form joint working groups to explore economic partnerships and facilitate the return of Syrian refugees from Morocco. The Syrian minister also met with Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch to discuss further collaboration.
