Under Yzerman's leadership, the Red Wings drafted key players such as Moritz Seider (2019, 6th overall) and Lucas Raymond (2020, 4th overall). The team finished the 2025-26 season with a 35-32-15 record, placing sixth in the Atlantic Division and missing the playoffs for the ninth consecutive year.
Yzerman's tenure was marked by a focus on developing young talent and building through the draft. He previously served as general manager of the Tampa Bay Lightning from 2010 to 2018, winning the Stanley Cup in 2020 and 2021 with that organization.
The Red Wings have not yet announced a replacement. Potential candidates include assistant general manager Pat Verbeek and former NHL executive Brian Burke, though no official search has been confirmed.
