Spanish port operators have shown growing interest in the Dakhla Atlantic Port project, a major infrastructure initiative in the Western Sahara region. According to reports from Spanish media, several companies are evaluating participation in the development of this strategic port, which aims to boost trade and economic integration in the area.
The Dakhla Atlantic Port, located near the city of Dakhla in the disputed territory of Western Sahara, is part of Morocco's broader plan to enhance its Atlantic coastline. The project includes the construction of a deep-water port capable of handling large cargo vessels, as well as associated logistics and industrial zones.
Spanish interest comes as Morocco seeks international partners for the project, which is estimated to cost several billion dollars. The port is expected to serve as a hub for fishing, mining, and container shipping, connecting West Africa to global markets.
However, the project remains controversial due to the unresolved status of Western Sahara, which Morocco claims as its own while the Polisario Front seeks independence. The United Nations continues to push for a political solution to the conflict.
