Spanish and French authorities have dismantled a criminal network that smuggled migrants across the border between the two countries, according to a joint statement released on August 19, 2026. The operation, which involved coordinated raids on both sides of the Pyrenees, led to the arrest of 12 individuals suspected of organizing illegal border crossings.
The network operated primarily in the regions of Catalonia in Spain and Occitanie in France, using vehicles and guides to transport migrants, many of whom were from sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East. The smugglers charged between €1,500 and €3,000 per person, according to investigators.
During the raids, authorities seized four vehicles, multiple mobile phones, and approximately €20,000 in cash. The investigation was launched in early 2026 after an increase in illegal crossings was detected in the area.
All 12 suspects face charges of migrant smuggling and criminal conspiracy. They are expected to appear before courts in Spain and France in the coming weeks. The operation was carried out with the support of Europol, which provided intelligence and coordination.
