The Spanish government, led by Prime Minister Pedro SΓ‘nchez, has approved a royal decree to launch an extraordinary regularization process for undocumented migrants. The decree was approved by the Council of Ministers on Tuesday, April 14, 2026.
The measure aims to regularize migrants who have been living in Spain without legal status for at least two years, have no criminal record, and can demonstrate social and labor integration. The application period is set to open in May 2026 and will run for two months.
While official estimates on the number of potential beneficiaries vary, government sources and media reports suggest the plan could affect several hundred thousand people. The initiative is framed as a measure to address labor shortages in key sectors and improve social cohesion.
The regularization process requires applicants to submit documentation proving their residence, employment history, and community ties. Successful applicants will receive a one-year residence and work permit, which can be renewed.
