The Social Security Administration (SSA) has expanded its Compassionate Allowances program, adding 14 new health conditions to the list of ailments that qualify for expedited processing of disability benefits. This brings the total number of covered conditions to 314, according to an SSA announcement.
The Compassionate Allowances program is designed to fast-track disability claims for individuals with severe conditions that clearly meet Social Security's disability standards. The new additions include rare cancers, brain disorders, and genetic conditions, though the SSA has not yet published the full list of the 14 new conditions.
“We are committed to ensuring that people with the most severe disabilities receive their benefits as quickly as possible,” said an SSA spokesperson. The agency uses medical evidence and input from experts to identify conditions that are always disabling, reducing wait times for applicants.
Since the program began in 2008, it has helped thousands of Americans receive benefits in a matter of weeks rather than months or years. The SSA continues to review and update the list periodically based on medical advancements and public input.
