SINGAPORE: The number of marriages in Singapore fell by 6.2 per cent to 24,688 in 2025 from 26,328 the year before, according to the family trends report released by the Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF) on Friday (Jul 10).

The report also highlighted that couples are having children later. The median age of first-time mothers rose to 31.2 years in 2025, up from 30.9 in 2024, while the median age of first-time fathers increased to 33.1 years from 32.8.

MSF attributed the decline in marriages partly to demographic shifts and changing societal norms. The total number of births also decreased, with 30,500 babies born in 2025, compared to 31,200 in 2024.

Experts noted that economic factors and housing costs continue to influence family formation decisions. The government has introduced measures such as enhanced parental leave and baby bonuses to encourage marriage and childbearing.
