According to verified reports, nations including the United States, France, and several Arab and African states have expressed backing for Morocco's autonomy plan for the territory. The plan, proposed in 2007, envisions a semi-autonomous Western Sahara under Moroccan sovereignty.
The United Nations continues to mediate between Morocco and the Polisario Front, which seeks independence for Western Sahara. The UN Security Council has repeatedly called for a mutually acceptable political solution.
Morocco's position has gained increasing international recognition, with over 20 countries opening consulates in the disputed territory's major cities, Laayoune and Dakhla, since 2020.
