Senegal's President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has been elected as the new Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). The 46-year-old leader was chosen during the regional bloc's summit held in Freetown, Sierra Leone, on July 7, 2024.
Faye succeeds Sierra Leone's President Julius Maada Bio, who had held the position since July 2023. The handover marks a routine rotation of the chairmanship among ECOWAS member states.
Faye assumes the role at a time when the bloc faces significant challenges, including political instability in some member states and economic pressures. His election was confirmed by ECOWAS officials during the summit.
As chairman, Faye will oversee the organization's efforts to promote regional integration, peace, and security. He is expected to prioritize dialogue with countries under military rule, such as Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, which have announced their withdrawal from ECOWAS.
