The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) has announced it will publicly display the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) trophy, a move defying the Confederation of African Football's (CAF) recent decision to revoke Senegal's 2025 title and award it to Morocco. FSF president Augustin Senghor described the federation's planned response as a "crusade" against what it calls an unjust ruling.
CAF's disciplinary committee stripped Senegal of the title on March 26, 2026, citing the use of an ineligible player during the tournament's final. The governing body subsequently awarded the championship to runner-up Morocco. The specific player and nature of the ineligibility were detailed in CAF's official disciplinary report.
In response, the FSF has stated it will appeal the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). Meanwhile, the federation plans to tour the physical trophy across Senegal in a symbolic act of protest. "This trophy belongs to the Senegalese people," Senghor was quoted as saying in a federation press release.
The controversy has sparked significant debate within African football circles regarding governance and regulations. The upcoming CAS appeal is expected to be a protracted legal process, with the trophy's official status remaining in limbo until a final verdict is reached.
