The U.S. military has confirmed that the body of a second American soldier who went missing during a training exercise in southern Morocco has been found. The soldier was part of a multinational exercise known as African Lion 2026, which involves forces from several countries, including the United States and Morocco.
According to U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), the soldier was reported missing on May 6, 2026, along with another service member. The first soldier was found deceased on May 10. The search for the second soldier involved Moroccan and U.S. personnel using ground teams and aircraft. The body was discovered on May 13, 2026, in a remote area near the exercise location.
AFRICOM stated that the cause of death is under investigation, but there is no indication of foul play. The names of the soldiers are being withheld pending notification of next of kin. The exercise, African Lion, is an annual event designed to enhance interoperability and security cooperation between the U.S. and its African partners.
