The Nigerian Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has confirmed that it received an application from Dangote Refinery for a $5 billion Initial Public Offering (IPO). The announcement was made on August 17, 2026, by SEC Director-General Emomotimi Agama during a press briefing in Abuja.
The IPO would allow Nigerian citizens to purchase shares in the 650,000 barrels-per-day refinery, which is the largest in Africa. According to Agama, the application is currently under review, and the SEC is committed to ensuring transparency and protecting investor interests.
This development comes after years of speculation about the refinery's listing. The Dangote Group, led by Africa's richest man Aliko Dangote, has not yet set a date for the IPO, but the SEC's confirmation marks a significant step toward public participation.
Analysts see the move as a way to boost local ownership of critical infrastructure and deepen Nigeria's capital market. However, the refinery has faced challenges, including crude supply shortages and regulatory hurdles, which could affect the IPO's valuation.
