The Supreme Court of India has directed all states and union territories to integrate all emergency and ambulance helplines into a single helpline number '112' within three months. The court noted that the right to trauma care is an integral part of the right to life under Article 21 of the Constitution.
A bench comprising Justices A.M. Khanwilkar and Dinesh Maheshwari issued the order while hearing a public interest litigation filed by advocate Gaurav Bansal. The court emphasized that a unified emergency response system is essential for timely assistance during medical emergencies.
The directive aims to streamline emergency services, ensuring that citizens can access police, fire, ambulance, and other emergency services through one number. Currently, multiple helpline numbers exist across different states, causing confusion and delays.
The court also directed the central government to ensure that the '112' system is fully operational and accessible in all regions, including rural areas. The order is expected to improve response times and save lives.
