According to Spanish authorities, more than 70,000 migrants entered Ceuta on July 30 and 31, 2026, swimming or walking from Morocco.
Most of the migrants returned to Morocco within hours, but several thousand remained in Ceuta, prompting a humanitarian and political crisis. The Spanish government has been criticized for its handling of the situation, while Morocco has faced accusations of lax border enforcement.
Sanchez's comments came during a parliamentary session where he defended Spain's response and called for increased European Union support. The incident has strained relations between Spain and Morocco, which had improved in recent years.
