President William Ruto has directed the Ministry of Education to begin a nationwide digitisation of all learner and school records, according to a statement from the State House on May 6, 2026. The initiative aims to streamline planning, improve accountability, and seal loopholes in the education sector.
The directive, announced during a meeting with education officials, calls for the creation of a centralised digital database for all learners, teachers, and schools. This system is intended to track enrollment, attendance, and performance, as well as manage teacher deployment and resource allocation.
Ruto emphasised that the digitisation will help eliminate ghost workers and phantom students, which have been a drain on public funds. The Ministry of Education is expected to roll out the system within the next 12 months, with pilot programs starting in select counties.
The move aligns with Kenya's broader digital transformation agenda, which includes the digitisation of government services under the 'Digital Kenya' initiative. Education stakeholders have welcomed the plan, though some have raised concerns about data privacy and the need for robust cybersecurity measures.
