According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Russia has lost approximately 1,560 soldiers over the past day, bringing the total estimated Russian combat losses since the start of the full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022, to about 510,000 as of May 31, 2026. This figure includes both killed and wounded personnel.
The Ukrainian military also reported that in the same 24-hour period, Russian forces lost 12 tanks, 24 armored combat vehicles, 30 artillery systems, and 2 multiple launch rocket systems. These numbers are based on Ukrainian military reports and have not been independently verified.
Russia has not released its own casualty figures for the past day. The Kremlin has previously dismissed Ukrainian estimates as exaggerated. Independent analysts, including from Western intelligence agencies, estimate Russian losses at several hundred thousand, but exact numbers remain difficult to confirm due to the fog of war.
The heaviest fighting continues in the eastern Donetsk region, particularly around the cities of Bakhmut and Avdiivka, as well as in the southern Zaporizhzhia region. Ukrainian forces have reported ongoing defensive operations and counterattacks in these areas.
