Robert Taylor, the former RNZ broadcaster who helped establish the beloved morning bird call tradition on the public broadcaster, has died at the age of 82. His death was confirmed by family and colleagues, who remembered him as a kind and gentle man with a deep passion for broadcasting and nature.
Taylor began his career at RNZ in the 1960s, and in the early 1970s, he introduced the daily bird call segment that became a hallmark of the station's morning programming. The tradition, which features recordings of native New Zealand birds, continues to this day and is cherished by listeners.
Beyond his work at RNZ, Taylor was an avid conservationist and contributed to various environmental initiatives. He was also a mentor to many young broadcasters, known for his patience and encouragement.
Taylor is survived by his wife and two children. A private funeral service is planned.
