The GSM Association (GSMA) has officially published the RCS Universal Profile (UP) version 4.0, which introduces a new capability for turning one-to-one or group RCS chats into video calls. This standard, part of the broader evolution of Rich Communication Services, is designed to be implemented by carriers and device manufacturers.
While the technical specification for video calling within RCS is now finalized, its availability to users depends on individual companies adopting and deploying the standard. Major Android phone makers and mobile operators are expected to integrate the feature over time, but no specific rollout timelines have been announced.
A key point of uncertainty remains Apple's participation. The company has committed to supporting the basic RCS Universal Profile standard for improved cross-platform messaging with Android devices, starting with iOS 18 in 2024. However, Apple has not specified which versions or advanced features, such as the video calling in UP 4.0, it will implement. This leaves the prospect of native, high-quality video calls between iPhone and Android users unresolved for the foreseeable future.
