The flyby used Mars's gravity to slingshot Psyche toward its primary target, the asteroid 16 Psyche, located in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. The maneuver adjusted the spacecraft's trajectory and increased its speed, a critical step in the mission that launched on October 13, 2023, from Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
The blue coloration in the image is not natural but results from the specific filters used by the imager to study Mars's surface composition. NASA scientists explained that the false-color image highlights variations in mineralogy and dust, with blue areas indicating regions rich in iron-bearing minerals or fine dust particles. The image also shows dark features like the Syrtis Major volcanic province and the bright polar ice caps.
Psyche is expected to arrive at its namesake asteroid in August 2029, where it will spend about 26 months in orbit, studying the object's composition, structure, and magnetic field. The asteroid is thought to be the exposed core of an early planetesimal, offering insights into the formation of rocky planets like Earth.
