As of June 9, 2026, the federal government has not yet released specific details on its proposed social media ban for youth under 16, which was announced in April 2026. Provinces such as Alberta, Ontario, and Quebec have indicated they will monitor the federal approach before deciding on their own regulations.
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has previously stated the province is considering its own legislation, but will wait for the federal framework to avoid duplication. Ontario's government has also expressed interest in similar measures, while Quebec has its own Bill 74, which aims to restrict social media access for minors.
The federal bill, known as Bill C-63, proposes to require social media platforms to verify users' ages and obtain parental consent for users under 16. The legislation is still under review in Parliament.
