A major study published in the European Heart Journal has found that suboptimal diets were responsible for an estimated 4.08 million deaths from ischemic heart disease (IHD) globally in 2023. This represents over half of all IHD-related deaths for the year, highlighting diet as a primary modifiable risk factor.

The research, led by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), analyzed data from 204 countries. It identified key dietary risks, with low intake of whole grains, fruits, and legumes, and high consumption of sodium, as the leading contributors to diet-related IHD mortality. The burden was not evenly distributed, with middle-income countries experiencing the highest rates.

"Our analysis shows that poor dietary choices are a leading driver of heart disease deaths worldwide," stated a senior author of the study. The findings underscore the urgent need for public health policies that promote access to and consumption of healthier foods to prevent millions of preventable deaths annually.
