The Jammu and Kashmir People's Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed concern over what it describes as an 'atmosphere of fear' and restrictions imposed on the observance of July 13 Martyrs' Day in the region. The party alleged that authorities are curbing commemorative events and engaging in civic harassment.
According to a PDP statement issued on July 11, 2026, the party condemned the 'heavy-handed' approach by security forces, claiming it stifles democratic expression. The PDP specifically cited restrictions on gatherings and processions planned for July 13, a day marking the 1931 massacre of 22 Kashmiris by Dogra troops.
Local reports indicate that security measures have been heightened in Srinagar and other parts of the Kashmir Valley ahead of the anniversary. However, official sources have not confirmed specific curbs beyond standard security protocols for public events.
The PDP's allegations come amid ongoing political tensions in the region, which has been under central government rule since 2018. The party has called for the removal of restrictions and an end to what it terms 'civic harassment' of residents.
