According to the Mauritanian coast guard, more than 1,000 migrants were rescued off the coast of Mauritania between June 1 and June 10, 2026. The rescues involved multiple operations targeting overcrowded and unseaworthy boats attempting the dangerous Atlantic route to Europe.
The coast guard reported that the migrants, primarily from West African countries such as Senegal, Mali, and Guinea, were found in wooden fishing boats and inflatable dinghies. Many were dehydrated and in need of medical attention after days at sea without adequate supplies.
This surge in rescues highlights the ongoing migration crisis along the West African coast, where thousands attempt the perilous journey each year. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has noted that the Atlantic route is one of the deadliest, with hundreds of deaths recorded annually.
Mauritania, a key transit country, has increased its maritime patrols in collaboration with European agencies to prevent loss of life. The rescued individuals were brought to the port of Nouadhibou for processing and humanitarian assistance.
