Morocco's National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE) has secured a €250 million loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) to modernize its drinking water infrastructure. The financing, equivalent to approximately 2.8 billion Moroccan dirhams, was announced on June 10, 2026, according to a statement from the EBRD.
The loan will fund upgrades to water production facilities, including the construction of new desalination plants and the rehabilitation of existing networks to reduce water losses. The project aims to improve water security in Morocco, which faces increasing water stress due to climate change and population growth.
This is part of a broader EBRD strategy to support water efficiency in the southern and eastern Mediterranean region. The bank has previously financed similar projects in Morocco, including a €100 million loan for the Bouregreg valley water project in 2023.
ONEE officials stated that the investment will help the utility meet growing demand and align with Morocco's national water strategy for 2020-2050, which targets a 30% reduction in water consumption by 2030.
