A volunteer firefighter in Nova Scotia died Thursday evening after suffering a medical episode while responding to a wildfire in Annapolis County, according to local officials.
Alexandru Uichita, 40, was at the scene of a fire in Moschelle, near Bridgetown, when the incident occurred. He was a member of the Bridgetown & District Volunteer Fire Department.
The Nova Scotia Firefighters' Association confirmed the death, calling Uichita a 'quiet leader' who was dedicated to his community. The cause of the medical episode has not been released.
Flags at fire stations across the province were lowered to half-mast in his honor. Funeral arrangements are pending.
