The Director of Communications for Ghana's opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has publicly dismissed claims that party figure and 2024 flagbearer aspirant Kennedy Ohene Agyapong is involved with an emerging political group called 'The Base Movement'. Ahiagbah stated that Agyapong remains a committed member of the NPP and is not seeking to lead any splinter group.
The speculation arose following the NPP's defeat in the December 2024 general elections, which led to internal party discussions and the emergence of various factions. 'The Base Movement' has been mentioned in Ghanaian political discourse as a potential new grouping, but its structure and leadership remain unclear.
Kennedy Agyapong, a Member of Parliament for Assin Central and a prominent businessman, was a candidate in the NPP's 2023 presidential primaries, ultimately losing to the now-former President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. Since the party's 2024 electoral loss, he has been the subject of rumors regarding his political future.
Political analysts note that such denials are common during periods of post-election realignment within Ghana's major parties. The NPP is currently engaged in a process of introspection to rebuild after ceding power to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
