The committee reviews nominations and selects a winner through a majority vote. The winner is announced in October, and the award ceremony takes place on December 10, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel's death, in Oslo, Norway. The prize includes a gold medal, a diploma, and a monetary award, which in 2025 was 11 million Swedish kronor (approximately $1 million USD).
Notable recent winners include the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) in 2017, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in 2019, and the World Food Programme in 2020. The prize has been awarded to organizations 30 times as of 2025.
