Morocco's Minister of Transport and Logistics, Abdessamad Kayouh, on Tuesday in Rabat called for a comprehensive overhaul of the country's road safety approach to integrate new mobility modes, particularly the growing use of electric scooters. Speaking at a conference, Kayouh emphasized the need to adapt legislation to the rapid evolution of urban transport.
The minister highlighted that current road safety laws do not adequately cover electric scooters, which have become increasingly popular in Moroccan cities. He proposed creating specific traffic rules, infrastructure requirements, and safety measures for these devices, including mandatory helmets and age restrictions.
Kayouh also stressed the importance of awareness campaigns targeting users of electric scooters and other personal mobility vehicles. The initiative aims to reduce accidents involving these new modes of transport, which have seen a sharp increase in recent years.
No specific timeline or draft law was announced, but the minister indicated that consultations with stakeholders, including local authorities and transport experts, would begin soon. The move aligns with Morocco's broader strategy to modernize its transport sector and improve road safety.
