Manitoba's chief public health officer, Dr. Brent Roussin, stated on Thursday that there are no cases of hantavirus in the province, describing a recent incident involving a cruise ship as an isolated event.
βThis is a serious but isolated event,β Dr. Roussin said. βWeβll see how this evolves.β He emphasized that Manitobans are not currently at risk from the virus.
The comments come after reports of several people on a cruise ship traveling to an unspecified location falling ill with hantavirus. Dr. Roussin did not provide further details about the ship or the affected individuals.
Hantavirus is a rare but serious disease transmitted through contact with rodent droppings, urine, or saliva. Symptoms can include fever, muscle aches, and respiratory issues.
