Nigeria's House of Representatives has stepped back from its own constitutional amendment on state policing and will instead consider a similar bill submitted by the Presidency, according to reports from the plenary session on July 14, 2026.
The shift became evident during Tuesday's plenary when lawmakers decided to prioritize the executive bill, which proposes the establishment of state police forces to address security challenges across the country. The House had previously been working on its own amendment.
Speaker Tajudeen Abbas confirmed the decision, stating that the House would harmonize its efforts with the executive to ensure a unified approach. The bill is expected to undergo further legislative scrutiny before a final vote.
This development follows President Bola Tinubu's earlier push for decentralized policing, a key demand from state governors and security experts amid rising insecurity in various regions.
