The federal government of Nigeria has declared Wednesday, May 27 and Thursday, May 28, 2026, as public holidays to celebrate the Eid-el-Kabir festival. The announcement was made by Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Minister of Interior, in a statement signed by Magdalene Ajani, Permanent Secretary of the ministry.
The minister congratulated the Muslim faithful on the occasion and urged them to use the period for prayer and reflection. He also called on Nigerians to support the government's efforts in building a peaceful and prosperous nation.
Eid-el-Kabir, also known as the Feast of Sacrifice, is one of the most important Islamic festivals, commemorating the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God. The holiday is marked by prayers, feasting, and the sacrifice of livestock.
