The driver, Lim Yong Sim, pleaded guilty to one charge of causing death by a negligent act. According to court reports, he failed to stop at a red traffic light while driving a Mercedes-Benz, colliding with a 57-year-old male cyclist, Mr. Tan Eng Soon, who had the right of way. Mr. Tan was pronounced dead at the scene.
During sentencing, the judge considered Lim's guilty plea and his age, but emphasized the need for deterrence given the serious consequences of the offense.
