On April 18, 2026, a 70-year-old co-founder of the New Ubin Group restaurant chain was sentenced to 10 months and two weeks' imprisonment for causing the death of a cyclist by running a red light in 2022. The incident occurred on the evening of November 11, 2022, at the junction of Clementi Road and Commonwealth Avenue West in Singapore.
The driver, Lim Yong Sim, pleaded guilty to one charge of causing death by a negligent act. According to court reports, he failed to stop at a red traffic light while driving a Mercedes-Benz, colliding with a 57-year-old male cyclist, Mr. Tan Eng Soon, who had the right of way. Mr. Tan was pronounced dead at the scene.
During sentencing, the judge considered Lim's guilty plea and his age, but emphasized the need for deterrence given the serious consequences of the offense. The prosecution noted that Lim had a clear view of the traffic light for about 70 meters before the junction. The defense highlighted Lim's contributions to the community and his remorse.
Lim was also disqualified from driving all classes of vehicles for eight years following his release. The New Ubin Group, known for its zi char and steak dishes, has not issued a public statement regarding the sentencing as of this report.
