As of mid-2026, nearly ten international oil and gas companies are actively exploring for hydrocarbons in Morocco, according to industry reports and government statements. The North African kingdom has seen a surge in exploration activity following significant gas discoveries in recent years, particularly in the offshore areas near the Atlantic coast.
Companies such as Eni, Chariot Oil & Gas, and Sound Energy are among those with active licenses. Eni has made notable gas finds in the offshore area, while Chariot is progressing with its Anchois gas project. Sound Energy is developing the Tendrara gas field in eastern Morocco. The Moroccan government has also launched licensing rounds to attract further investment.
Morocco's energy strategy aims to reduce its dependence on energy imports, which currently cover over 90% of its needs. The country is also investing in renewable energy, but natural gas is seen as a transitional fuel. The exploration activities are concentrated in the offshore Atlantic basins and the onshore areas in the east and south.
Industry analysts note that while commercial production has not yet started from recent discoveries, the potential is significant. The government has offered attractive fiscal terms to encourage exploration, including a new hydrocarbon law passed in 2023. The results of ongoing drilling campaigns are expected in the coming months.
