Ten international companies are currently conducting exploration activities for oil and gas in Morocco, Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development Leila Benali announced on June 30, 2026. The statement was made during a parliamentary session in Rabat.
According to Benali, these companies are operating in various onshore and offshore blocks across the country. The exploration efforts are part of Morocco's strategy to reduce its energy dependence and attract foreign investment in the energy sector.
The minister did not disclose the names of the companies involved but emphasized that the exploration activities are ongoing and subject to regulatory oversight. Morocco currently imports over 90% of its energy needs, making domestic hydrocarbon discoveries a strategic priority.
Benali also highlighted that the government is working to improve the legal framework for hydrocarbon exploration to encourage more investment. The country has seen renewed interest from international oil companies in recent years due to improved geological data and fiscal terms.
