Morocco is positioning itself as a potential green energy hub for Europe through the T-MED project, which involves building a submarine cable to export electricity generated from renewable sources. The project, led by the Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy (MASEN), aims to connect Morocco's solar and wind farms to the European grid.
As of June 2026, the T-MED project is in the feasibility and planning stages, with an estimated cost of several billion euros. The cable would have a capacity of up to 3 gigawatts, enough to power millions of homes in Europe. Morocco already has one of the world's largest concentrated solar power plants, Noor Ouarzazate, with a capacity of 580 MW.
However, the project faces challenges, including financing, regulatory hurdles, and competition from other renewable energy initiatives in Europe. The European Union has expressed interest in diversifying its energy sources, but no final investment decision has been made yet.
