Abdelmalek Alaoui, a Moroccan economist, strategist, and founder of the GreenTech Morocco think tank, has authored Maroc, le défi de la puissance (Morocco, the Challenge of Power), a work that examines the Kingdom of Morocco's evolving role as an emerging regional power in Africa and on the global stage.
The book explores Morocco's strategic positioning across several key dimensions, including its expanding economic ties across sub-Saharan Africa, its infrastructure investments, and its diplomatic balancing act between Western partners and African nations. Morocco has in recent years deepened its presence on the African continent through state-backed enterprises and bilateral agreements, while also strengthening ties with Gulf states and European partners.
Alaoui, who has written extensively on Moroccan economic policy and geopolitics, argues that Morocco faces a defining moment in which it must leverage its geographic position, renewable energy potential, and diplomatic networks to consolidate its influence. The kingdom has made significant investments in solar and wind energy, positioning itself as a potential green energy hub for Europe and Africa.
The book also addresses Morocco's geopolitical challenges, including the long-standing Western Sahara dispute and regional rivalries, particularly with Algeria. These tensions continue to shape Morocco's foreign policy calculus and its pursuit of international recognition for its positions. Morocco's hosting of the 2030 FIFA World Cup, jointly with Spain and Portugal, is also cited as a symbol of the country's growing soft power ambitions.
