Morocco's Minister of Transport and Logistics, Abdessamad Kayouh, outlined a comprehensive roadmap for the development of the national merchant marine on May 26, 2026. The plan follows the National Assises on the Merchant Marine, which were held earlier in the year to address challenges and opportunities in the sector.
According to official statements, the roadmap focuses on modernizing the fleet, improving port infrastructure, and enhancing the competitiveness of Moroccan shipping companies. Kayouh emphasized the need to increase the share of Moroccan-flagged vessels in international trade and to train more qualified personnel for the maritime industry.
The minister also highlighted the importance of digitalization and environmental sustainability, aligning with global trends in shipping. Specific measures include tax incentives for shipowners, simplified administrative procedures, and partnerships with international maritime organizations.
The initiative is part of Morocco's broader strategy to strengthen its position as a regional maritime hub, leveraging its strategic location on the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts. The government aims to boost the sector's contribution to the national economy and create new jobs.
