Morocco's candidate, Ismahane Elouafi, is among the leading contenders for the position of Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), according to reports. The election is scheduled for 2027, with the current Director-General, Qu Dongyu, completing his second term.
Elouafi, a Moroccan agricultural scientist, currently serves as the Chief Scientist at the FAO. She has extensive experience in agricultural research and policy, having previously led the International Center for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA) in Dubai. Her candidacy is seen as a strong bid from Africa, which has not held the FAO's top post since 2011.
The race is marked by European rivalries, with several candidates from the region also vying for the position. The election process involves a vote by the FAO's member states, with the winner requiring a two-thirds majority. The final decision is expected in 2027.
