Moroccan authorities are conducting a review of the planned maximum operating speed for the country's new high-speed rail line, known as the LGV (Ligne à Grande Vitesse). The project, which will connect Casablanca to Marrakech, is a major infrastructure development.
Initial plans had set a top speed of 360 km/h. However, the National Railways Office (ONCF) has confirmed a study is underway to potentially lower this limit to between 300 and 320 km/h. The primary reasons cited for the review are to optimize energy consumption and reduce overall operational and maintenance costs.
A final decision on the operational speed is expected to be made later in 2026. The line itself remains a flagship project, with the first phase between Casablanca and Marrakech aiming to significantly reduce travel times upon its anticipated opening.
