Morocco's natural gas imports via the Maghreb-Europe pipeline (GME) from Spain reached 81 million cubic meters in July, a 17.4% increase compared to the same month last year, according to data released on August 7, 2026.
The GME pipeline, which historically transported Algerian gas to Spain and Portugal, has been operating in reverse flow since November 2021, allowing Spain to export gas to Morocco. This reversal followed the diplomatic crisis between Morocco and Algeria, which led to the closure of the pipeline in its original direction.
The increase in imports reflects Morocco's growing reliance on natural gas for power generation, particularly in the industrial sector. The country has been investing in gas infrastructure, including the construction of a new gas pipeline connecting the GME to its main consumption centers.
Morocco's energy strategy aims to diversify its energy sources and reduce dependence on coal and oil. The country has set a target to increase the share of renewable energy in its electricity mix to 52% by 2030, but natural gas is seen as a transitional fuel to ensure grid stability.
The rise in imports also comes as Morocco prepares to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which is expected to boost energy demand. The government has announced plans to expand its gas storage capacity and develop new power plants to meet future needs.
