Morocco's government has announced a new digital service that will allow Moroccans residing abroad (MRE) to complete the formalities for setting up a voting proxy online, ahead of the 2026 legislative elections. The measure aims to simplify the voting process for the diaspora, which has often faced logistical challenges in participating in national elections.
The online proxy system is part of a broader digitalization effort by the Moroccan administration. According to official statements, the service will be available through the national digital platform, allowing voters to authorize a representative to vote on their behalf without needing to visit a consulate or administrative office in person.
The announcement was made by the Ministry of the Interior, which emphasized that the new system would reduce delays and bureaucratic hurdles. The ministry also stated that the service would be secure and compliant with Moroccan electoral law, ensuring the integrity of the vote.
This initiative is expected to increase voter participation among the Moroccan diaspora, which is estimated at over five million people. The 2026 legislative elections are scheduled to take place later in the year, and the online proxy service is seen as a key step in facilitating broader civic engagement.
