Morocco's National Agency for the Safety of Medicines and Health Products (AMMPS) has issued a warning about unauthorized sports supplements and banned substances circulating in the market. The agency highlighted the growth of the sports supplement sector, driven by the proliferation of gyms and social media sales, which complicates the verification of product origins and compositions.
According to the AMMPS, many products are sold through informal channels, bypassing regulatory oversight. This poses significant health risks to consumers, as some supplements may contain undeclared or prohibited ingredients, including anabolic steroids or stimulants that are banned in Morocco.
The agency has urged consumers to purchase supplements only from authorized pharmacies and to check for the AMMPS registration number on product labels. It also called on authorities to strengthen controls and surveillance of online sales and informal distribution networks.
This warning aligns with broader concerns about the global sports supplement industry, where regulatory gaps and counterfeit products are common. In Morocco, the AMMPS continues to monitor the market and take action against non-compliant products.
