Morocco has been ranked as the leading industrial economy in Africa, according to the African Development Bank's (AfDB) 2025 Africa Industrialization Index. The index was released during the AfDB's Annual Meetings in Abidjan, CΓ΄te d'Ivoire, on May 26, 2026.
The index evaluates African countries based on multiple factors including manufacturing output, export diversification, technological readiness, and policy environment. Morocco's top position reflects its significant investments in automotive, aerospace, and renewable energy sectors.
South Africa and Egypt followed Morocco in the rankings, maintaining their positions as major industrial players on the continent. The AfDB noted that Morocco's success is partly due to its stable economic policies and infrastructure development.
This achievement marks a milestone for Morocco, which has been actively pursuing industrial modernization under its National Industrial Acceleration Plan. The country's automotive sector, in particular, has seen substantial growth, becoming a key exporter to Europe and other regions.
The AfDB's index aims to provide a benchmark for industrialization efforts across Africa, encouraging policy reforms and investments to boost manufacturing and reduce reliance on raw material exports.
